Some might say it’s that little muscle called the tongue. Yet, its hard to determine which muscle is the most powerful because muscles don’t work separate of themselves.
However, we do know that the tongue is indeed strong. For a small muscle, it can do an awful lot of damage. This active little muscle helps us eat, swallow, taste, and begin digestion and has a tendency to also say things it shouldn’t too. The tongue is guilty of flattery, cursing, lying, boasting, wounding and at times killing the spirit within others. And the list goes on and on……
It could in fact be deemed a pretty dangerous muscle, couldn’t it?
But here is the good thing: It doesn’t have to be that way. When we are controlled by Holy Spirit, our tongues can be used for only good. We can speak of God’s righteousness and justice. We can speak truth, love, and confess our sin.
Proverbs 12:18 spells out one of the worst and best uses for our tongue: “There is one who speaks rashly like the thrusts of a sword, But the tongue of the wise brings healing.” Imagine how we could glorify Father God who made our tongues when He helps us use them to bring healing and not harm to those that we speak to on a daily basis.
May we all be mindful how we use this small yet powerful muscle.
